Overthrowing the Mullahs with Art

Capturing all the suffering, the pain of an entire population in one image - this is perhaps the greatest challenge for those who respond artistically to the circumstances of the revolution in Iran. Siavash (Instagram) is one of the artists who succeeds in this. With caricatures that reverse current power relations and symbolically dispose of the mullahs, with poetic images, but also with variations, quotes from well-known grafitti (e.g. by Banksy), the Iranian-born artist finds his own expression and a resonating voice. We show a selection of his artworks.

The artist about himself:

My artist name is Siavash and I have been living in Germany for almost seven years now. As a child I was interested in art and culture. My style is modern art. I have been painting pictures with political themes for years, and this has become more intense with the beginning of the women's revolution in Iran so I create one or two pictures almost every week on the theme of protest art. The idea of the paintings is based on the events that are happening during this uprising.
